Grim Rider's Website
A site dedicated to long distance motorcycling &
home of the Grim Riders MCC
I owe thanks to Chris McGaffin of IBA Ireland for the original idea for this ride, and especially to Andy Long of the Round Britain Rally forum for coming up with the particular list of Lifeboat Stations to visit for this ride, from the 230 lifeboat stations located in the UK and Republic of Ireland. All money raised from this ride will be donated to the RNLI, who, like the air ambulance service, rely on charity donations to support their work of saving lives at sea - 137000 since 1842. n.b. as of 28/11/09 a couple of the statons to be visited have been changed, mainly because of difficulties of access to the Humber station. The list below is accurate, as is the roadbook.
Completing the Ride
Riders must visit a number of lifeboat stations across England, Scotland and Wales listed below.
Touring Ride - At each of the lifeboat stations you visit you must take a photograph of a sign showing the station's name, your ride flag, and your motorbike. These may be taken and submitted any time and there is no time restriction for visiting the lifeboat stations, so may be visited over several trips, months, or even years. Visiting 5 stations will gain a bronze certificate; 10 stations for a silver certificate; and all 15 to gain a gold certificate.
Challenge Ride - Before completing the ride you must contact me (I suggest at least two weeks before intending to complete the ride). I will arrange to send you a number before you start the ride. You will need to take two photographs at each stop - one showing the lifeboat station, your ride flag, and your motorbike; the other showing your GPS unit showing the location's coordinates, the time, and a sticker with this number on it. (For further information see here). In addition, you will need to provide a copy of a printed receipt from where you start from; a printed receipt from where you finish; and printed receipts from some or all of the following locations - Thurso, Oban, Barmouth, Helston, Lowestoft or Scarborough. Any printed receipt with the name of the town on it is acceptable, eg a petrol station, ATM machine etc. Further details of Challenge Rides can be found here.
For a bronze certificate you must visit 5 stations provide start & finish receipts and a receipt from at least two of the six receipt locations.
For a silver certificate you must visit 10 stations, provide start & finish receipts and receipts from at least four of the six receipt locations.
For a gold certificate you must visit all 15 stations, provide start & finish receipts and receipts from all six receipt locations.
