Grim Rider's Website
A site dedicated to long distance motorcycling &
home of the Grim Riders MCC
Raised for the Air Ambulance:
£6896
Welcome! This site reflects my interest in long distance motorcycling and especially competitive road rallies in the United Kingdom and beyond.
I hope it will prove to be a useful resource for those of you with similar interests.
Grim Riders organise a number of rides, including a charity ride with a different theme each year to raise money for the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. Rides can either be completed as 'Touring Rides', meaning you collect landmarks at your leisure on as many rides out as you like over as long a period of time as you like; or as 'Challenge Rides', meaning you set out to visit a set number of landmarks from a ride on one ride. This gives you the freedom to tailor rides to your own interests and time commitments.
We also arrange three challenge rides through the year in February (Winter Challenge), April (Treasure Hunt), and October (October Outing) - each has a different theme.
If you have any questions or comments about anything you read on this site, please feel free to contact me via the contacts page and I shall get back to you as soon as I can,
ride safe, Grim.
Click on either of the logos to the left for details of how to enter for this year's Charity Ride. Once registered you are eligible to start collecting landmarks from any of the other rides listed on the rides page here.
I have been riding bikes for around 27 years, over half my life. In that time I have owned over 20 bikes, including a Yamaha YB100, Suzuki GSXR750. BMW K1200RS and five BMW Boxer twins. I covered over 100,000 miles on two of those - a BMW R100RS and a Yamaha FJ1200 and am getting close to that on my current BMW R1150GS. I worked as a motorcycle courier for two years in the mid-80s and then as Sales & Workshop Manager of a Honda & Suzuki dealers before eventually becoming a teacher.
My first road rally was in 1985 when I rode a Honda CX500 in the National Road Rally, but I didn't take up long distance riding seriously until 2008, shortly before the first IBA UK Brit Butt Rally. Since then I have ridden my GS in around 40 rallies of various sorts, including taking first place in all five Brit Butt Rallies (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012); first in the IBA Norn Rally in Northern Ireland (2008); first in the Welsh Rally (2008); second in both IBA Bally Rallies in Ireland (2009, 2010); and third in the Norwegian Camel Rally (2009).
I have also completed many long distance rides, as recognised by the IBA and Long Distance Riders, riding 1000 miles within 24 hours at least 10 times.
In November 2008 I had a serious motorcycle accident on a Yamaha TX750 which left me with a titanium rod holding my right femur together and I might have lost my leg but for the Air Ambulance. It was while recuperating that I came up with the idea for Grim Riders, with the aim of raising money to support the work of the Air Ambulance, which receives no money from the government nor any national lottery funding. Many thanks to all of you who continue to support this initiative as we get close to having raised £7000.
